you told me i had blue eyes,
and i thought that was strange—
because of course i did:
they were blue like the rain.
-
“i’ve had them since forever,”
i said, my lips tugged into a frown,
wondering why you had spoken
as if it were something profound.
-
“no,” you replied, shaking your head.
“you have blue eyes.”
as if they could be something else instead.
-
yet i realized—
with painful spite—as the familiar sting crept to the corners of my eyes,
you hadn’t meant the color at all,
and that was when the tears
started to fall.
thanks for reading,
wishing you well. <3

"maybe you're right and we should stop watchin' the news, 'cause, baby, I've never seen brown eyes look so blue"
It truly didn’t hit me until I read it a second time. So beautiful and haunting in a way! 👏
